Arrows power past Pioneers

Kalie Petroelje faced two batters over the minimum as Lowell blasted East Grand Rapids 19-0 in  O-K White softball.

The Lowell hurler allowed one hit and walked just one Pioneer batter.

Petroelje’s wonderful work on the mound was supported by Lindsey Crawford’s 3-for-3 day at the plate and  six runs batted in.

“Crawford had a big day at the plate and Kailie pitched another marvelous game for us,” said Lowell softball coach, Bill McElroy.

 

Thousand Oaks unkind to Arrows

A disappointing performance at Thousand Oaks spelled a 155-185 loss to  East Grand Rapids in O-K White conference golf for Lowell’s Red Arrows.

“We did not score well at Thousand Oaks. We now get ready for our first home conference match. I expect we’ll do much better,” said Lowell coach Gary Fredline.

Leading scorer for Lowell against EGR was Ben Hart with a round of 45. He was followed by Joe Gauck, 46; and Brandon Poll, 47 and Alec Roerig carded 47s.

 

 

Red Arrow girls best Wildcats

Lowell improved its O-K White conference girls track record to 2-1 with a 78-49 win over Northview.

The Red Arrows won 11 of the 16 events, but led by only four (45-41) after 11 events.

“This was the worst weather of the year. We canceled pole vault because it wasn’t safe to jump,” said Lowell girls track coach, Robin Briggs.

Despite the miserable weather, Kalli Holzhueter pressed forward with her year’s best times in the 800-meter run (2:31)  and 1600-meter run (5:36).

“The cold weather didn’t seem to bother Kalli,” Briggs underscored.

Danele Starkey pushed past the weather in the long jump as she posted a winning distance of 14′-3 3/4.” She was also instrumental in Lowell’s relay wins in the 800- and 400-meters.

Joining her in the 800 relay were Kendall Hewitt, Hannah Boon, and Stephanie Vosburg.

Teaming up with Starkey in the 400 relay were Boon, Vosburg and Strasburg.

Rebekah Betts continued to improve her time in the 300 hurdles. The Red Arrow recorded a winning time of 52.77.

Lowell’s Holzhueter, Betts, Rachel Walters and Hewitt won a third relay (1600) of the day stopping the clock in 4:28.

Matti Newman continued to enjoy success in the shot put as she unleashed a winning throw of 37′-6-1/2″.

Walters (1:04.9) and Hewitt (1:05.5) came home one, two in the 400-meter run.

Kendall Hewitt grabbed top honors in the 200-meter run with a winning time of 30.04.

Jessica Graves distanced herself  by over a minute from her nearest competitor in the 3200-mete run. She was clocked in 13:41.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lowell boys fall short at Northview

Despite a splendid performance from Matt Kyllonen, Lowell boys track team fell short in its meet against Northview, losing 74-54.

“We had a number of small victories and on paper I felt we should have won the meet,” said Lowell boys track coach Sarah Ellis.

Kyllonen had a grand day as he claimed firsts in the high jump, the 400M, 200M and had a leg in the winning 800-meter relay.

“I knew Matt would be a contributor this year, but we were surprised at how well he is doing in the high jump, he consistently is over 5’10”, his best being 6’1,” Ellis explained. Kyllonen cleared 5’10” to win the high  jump. He stopped the clock in a winning time of 54.78 to win the 400 meter run and his 24.3 took top honors in the 200 meter run.

The Red Arrow was the final leg in the Red Arrows’ winning 800-meter relay time of 1:40.1. Joining Kyllonen were Dylan Brower, Leighton Watson and Jacob Meyer.

It was Watson, Meyer, Brower and Robby Coffey stopping the clock in a winning time of 48.66 in the 400 relay.

Meyer raced home in 11.98 to claim the top spot in the 100-meter dash.

Bryce Hrusovsky won the 110 hurdles as he posted a winning time of 17.34. The Red Arrow also finished second (47.82) in the 300 hurdles.

Meyer (24.6) and Sean Khodl (2:13) were second in the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run respectively.

Lowell girls capture Lake Orion championship

A strong, shut out pitching performance from Morgan Groom and a game-winning RBI single off the bat of Brianna Richardson propelled Lowell girls softball team to a 2-0 win over the host in the championship game of the Lake Orion softball tournament.

“Lake Orion was undefeated and state ranked. It was a nice win for us,” said Lowell softball coach Bill McElroy.

Lowell (12-4, 1-0) got to the championship game winning two of their opening three games.

The Red Arrows started the day with a 7-0 win over Port Huron. Lowell rapped out 10 hits. Sara Mogor and Bethany Dean both collected two hits in three plate appearances.

Groom pitched a completed game shutout.

In the second game against Waterford Mott, the Lowell battled to a 1-0 victory. The Red Arrows scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by Brianna Richardson, a sacrice bunt and a key RBI single by Lindsey Crawford. “Kaylie Petroelje pitched a beautiful 1-0 gem,” explained McElroy.

Lowell’s only loss of the day came in the third game when the Red Arrows ran into a strong Warren Regina team, led by their CMU-bound ace pitcher, Chelsea DeLamielleure. Lowell put the ball in play numerous times but Regina’s defense held on for a 7-3 win over Lowell.

 

 

 

 

Eagles shoot past Arrows

Lowell boys golf team split its tri-meet with Creston and Grand Rapids Christian at Quail Ridge Golf Course.

The Red Arrows carded a team score of 178, 17 shots in back of the Eagles.

Christian finished with a round of 161 while Creston came home in 256.

“Grand Rapids Christian is a very good golf team,” said Lowell coach Gary Fredline. “We didn’t play our best, but we’re making progress.”

Brandon Poll led all Lowell golfers with a nine-hole total of 42. Ben Hart and Alec Roerig followed two shots back with scores of 44 while Aaron Anderson shot a 48.

” I still feel we can be a factor in the conference race,” Fredline concluded.

 

 

 

Poll leads Lowell golfers past Portland

Lowell’s 360 in the O-K White Conference preseason golf tournament didn’t open any eyes, conversely it’s 169 against Portland was the type of score that makes one want to play again real soon.

“We played much better against Portland and posted a very competitive score especially under the poor weather conditions,” said Lowell boys golf coach Gary Fredline.

The Red Arrows defeated Portland in the dual match, 169-186.

Brandon Poll (40) posted Lowell’s top score. He was followed by Ben Hart, 41; Alec Roerig, 44; and Evan Kohtz, 44.

The Red Arrows’ 360 in the preseason conference tournament at Thornapple Pointe  Golf Course placed them fourth.

Hart, carded a top 10 score of 85. Poll carded an 89 followed by Roerig’s 93 and Anderson’s round of 93.

“We didn’t play very well, but I think our scores were high due to lack of practice because of weather issues.

East Grand Rapids won the tournament with a round of 321. Grand Rapids Christian was five strokes back at 326 and Greenville was third at 341.

 

 

 

 

 

Lowell girls sweep Sailors

 

Lowell pitching allowed one run on 10 hits in its doubleheader against South Christian.  Meanwhile, its bats pounded out 28 hits and score 15 runs in sweeping the Sailors, 3-0, 12-1.

The Red Arrows provided Morgan Groom all the support she’d need when they scored two runs in the second inning of game one

Carissa Paiz opened the inning with a double. She was sacrificed to third by Amanda Vietzke before Groom doubled her home. Groom would later score on a pass  ball.

Lowell  added an insurance run  in the sixth when Groom doubled home Vietzke from first. Vietzke got aboard with a one-out single.

South Christian’s first hit off the Groom did not come until the fifth inning. The Lowell ace gave up a lead-off triple before stranding the Sailor at third.

In game two, Lowell scored in every inning except the sixth as it plated 12 runs on 20 hits.

An RBI double by Paiz and an RBI single by Lindsey Crawford highlighted a two-run first for Lowell.

A bases-clearing double off the bat of Paiz, highlighted a four-run second for the Red Arrows.

A six-hit, four-run fifth inning saw Lowell increase it’s lead 12-1. A two-ut, two-run double by Sarah Mogor fueled the outburst.

 

G.R Christian sprints past Lowell

 

Grand Rapids Christian swept four events en route to a 90-47 girls track team win over Lowell.

The Eagles were dominant in the long jump, high jump, 100 hurdles and the 100 dash.

The Red Arrows recorded four firsts in the 200 and 400 runs, the 1600-meter relay and in the shot put.

Kendall Hewitt took top honors in the 200 run with a time of 29.65.

The Red Arrow also had a leg in the Red Arrows’ winning 1600-relay. Hewitt was joined by Rachal Walters, Kallie Holzhueter and Rebekah Betts. The foursome stopped the clock in 4:26.93.

Walters came home in a winning time of 1:03.34 in the 400-meter run.

Matti Newman powered her way to a win in the shot put with a throw of 30-6 1/2.

“Matti had a fantastic day throwing a personal best. It was 4 feet farther than she has ever thrown,” said Lowell coach Robin Briggs.

It was Hewitt, Hannah Boon, Danele Starkey and Stephanie Vosburg winning the 800-meter relay in a time of 2:02.75.

Holzhueter posted a winning time of 2:31.41 in the 800-meter run. Thde senior took a second in the 1600, coming home in 5:43.64.

Jessica Graves garnered a second in the 3200 run, recording a time of 13:14.98.

Betts’ time of 53:05 earned her a second in the 300 hurdles.

Vosburg’s throw of 88-06 placed her secnd in the discus field.

Abby Ellis cleared 7-0 in the pole  vault to take second.

“The meet was a good eye opener for the girls after beating Creston by a large number. We are still weak in the high jump and long jump and sprints,” Briggs concluded. “East (next on the schedule) is going to be a tough meet for us.”

 

 

 

 

Depth distances Eagles from Arrows

The long and short of it is Grand Rapids Christian boys track team had too much depth in the sprints and distance events for a building Lowell club.

“Grand Rapids Christian is a very strong team. It’s going to take a few years to beat a team like the Eagles. With hard work a little luck we will get there,” said Lowell boys’ track team coach Sarah Ellis.

The Eagles upended the Red Arrows 101-36.

Lowell garnered four firsts with three of those coming in the field events. The Arrows earned top honors in  the high jump, pole vault and shot put.

Bryce Hrusovsky edged Christian’s Jordan Daley in the 110 hurdles. Hrusovsky stopped the clock in 17.59 while Daley came home in 17.82.

Hrusovsky took a third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.76. Daley won the event with a time of 44.56.

Lowell’s Matt Kyllonen and Tobias Marks were one-two in the jump. Kyllonen won the event with a height of 6-1 while Marks cleared 5-10.

“Matt surprised us a little bit in the high jump, but he also had a good day in the 200- and 400-meter runs,” Ellis said.

Red Arrow Robby Coffey took top honors in the pole vault by clearing 11-0.

“He will keep improving in the pole vault, he jumped a solid 11′ for first  place against the Eagles,” Ellis said.

Leighton Watson and Robert Becker put forth a strong showing in the shot put.  Watson’s mark of 43-11.5 took first with Becker claiming third with a distance of 40-2.5.

Becker also placed second in the discus with a distance of 101-0.

Kyllonen and Becker provided Lowell with points in the 400 run. Kyllonen was second with a time of 53:10 while Becker finished third in 56.36.

Red Arrow Jacob Meter sprinted home in 12.17 to take second in the 100-meter dash. Christian’s Nate Thompson was first at 11.64.
