A strong, shut out pitching performance from Morgan Groom and a game-winning RBI single off the bat of Brianna Richardson propelled Lowell girls softball team to a 2-0 win over the host in the championship game of the Lake Orion softball tournament.
“Lake Orion was undefeated and state ranked. It was a nice win for us,” said Lowell softball coach Bill McElroy.
Lowell (12-4, 1-0) got to the championship game winning two of their opening three games.
The Red Arrows started the day with a 7-0 win over Port Huron. Lowell rapped out 10 hits. Sara Mogor and Bethany Dean both collected two hits in three plate appearances.
Groom pitched a completed game shutout.
In the second game against Waterford Mott, the Lowell battled to a 1-0 victory. The Red Arrows scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by Brianna Richardson, a sacrice bunt and a key RBI single by Lindsey Crawford. “Kaylie Petroelje pitched a beautiful 1-0 gem,” explained McElroy.
Lowell’s only loss of the day came in the third game when the Red Arrows ran into a strong Warren Regina team, led by their CMU-bound ace pitcher, Chelsea DeLamielleure. Lowell put the ball in play numerous times but Regina’s defense held on for a 7-3 win over Lowell.
