Anxious to remove that bitter taste of disappointment  that came with a loss in the Division 2 state championship game last year, Lowell, with the leadership of senior quarterback Gabe Dean, will seek out a fourth state title in 2011.

Lowell coach Noel Dean is quick to point out that his club returns just two offensive starters.

Gabe Dean, however, is a big one. The senior in two years as a starting quarterback fro the Red Arrows has thrown and run for  over 4,000 yards.

“He will look to add to that in his senior year. Gabe has benefitted from having many good players around him,” Dean said.

The other starter is running back Josh Addington.

“Our approach and the components needed in finding success will be more of the same, we just want to do it better,” Dean says.

Fans will also see and hear alt from junior tight end Red Stormzand.

Defensively, Lowell will keep the typical junkyard dog defense approach. “We’re going to come hit them in typical Lowell defensive style,”  Dean said.

Leading that charge will be defense end Pierce Watson; inside linebacker Jake Stehley; outside linebacker Jordan Drake along with the play in the secondary of Renn Osborne.

“The two keys for us will be the ability to tackle and the play of our offensive line,” Dean said. Both will be tested in the opener against Rockford. “Both pieces are so critical on our way to getting better.”

The Lowell coach claims Grand Rapids Christian is front runner in the O-K White in 2011. “With all the new talent they have, Christian should win the league,” Dean said.

Lowell opens the season up at home against Rockford.

Timmer and Nausieda lead Lowell’s pursuit of first title

Entering her 10th season as the Lowell girls varsity volleyball coach Gigi Peal is sure of a couple of things:

1. Her Red Arrows will be one of the top three teams vying for an O-K White Conference Championship in 2011.

2. And she will have, arguably, the league’s best volleyball player lacing it up for the Red Arrows.

“We lose eight players from last year, however, we have conference’s best setter and best libero returning,” Peal explained. “That’s a pretty good start and I’m glad  they are both on my side of the court.”

Jordan Timmer, Lowell’s Central Michigan bound setter, returns for her final season. The senior has averaged x assists over her first three years.

Stat on Arielle Nausieda

Playing alongside Timmer and Nausieda will be role players Stephanie Stevens, Abbie Petroelje, Hannah Tawney and Aubrey Steed.

Stevens is a outside hitter with a defensive specialists mentality. Petroelje will line up as a outside hitter while Tawney and Steed will be looked to fill some void at the middle hitter position.

“I have a roster of all team players. There’s no attitude,” Peal said. “Our strengths will  be defense and setting. While our defense is good, it will get better.

Peal said the girls have played quite a bit this summer and she was happy with what she saw.

Gobs of expectations for Red Arrow boys’ tennis

From one to 10 it may very well be the best boys tennis team Bonnie and Roger Wall have coached during their 14 years at Lowell.

“I’m excited about this boys’ team. We’re young , strong and they all can play,” Wall says.

The Lowell coach is most pleased with what she’s seen from the doubles teams.

“Our doubles teams are much stronger than a year ago. All of our doubles players have sound strokes,” Wall explained.

The number one doubles flight will be filled by juniors Mikah Babcock and Tony Hanson.

Sophomores Quinn Summerfield and Parker Groom will play second doubles while Paul Heemstra and Zach Fotis will fill the third doubles spot.

Junior Christian Huisman and sophomore Keaton Pomper have been penciled in at number four doubles.

Lowell’s top singles players one through four are Connor Smith, Austin Pix, Dan Cowden and Christian Kloosterman.

I have an idea as to how we will be,” Wall said. “I’m excited about the team and I’m expecting gobs,” said Wall, followed by a chuckle.

The League will once again be top heavy with the likes of powerhouses East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Christian. A strong Northview club will also be tough in 2011.

“We’re working on a top three finish. I think it’s a possibility,” Wall concluded.

Kyllonen, Sweet lead Red Arrow drive for league title

More good players than positions is a luxury Lowell boys’ soccer coach will just have to work around.

“Actually, it is a nice luxury. It’s creates good competition,” said soccer coach  Rich O’Keefe.

The Red Arrows,  third in the O-K White, finished with a record of 16-6 last year. Their season ended in a 3-0 district final loss to eventual Division I state champion,  Kentwood.

Lowell returns 14 players, eight of which were starters in 2010.

Leading the Red Arrows in their drive for a conference championship are seniors Joe Sweet and Matt Kyllonen.

“Joe was our leading scorer last year and will play midfield for us again this year,” said O’Keefe. “Matt has a great work ethic, a nose for the ball and is willing to focus on what coaches ask of him.”

Joining Sweet and Kyllonen will be what O’Keefe calls a very good group of juniors.

Alex Ligman will lineup at midfield alongside Sweet while Will Athmann will anchor the Red Arrow defensive unit.

Lowell’s coach says sophomore goalie Liam Kelley will be asked to step up to the challenge. “I think he can and I think this team can step up. They are all about team.”

With what appears to be a club with all the key elements in place, O’Keefe doesn’t deny the expectations run beyond competing. “Obviously we’d like to win the conference and go deeper into the state tournament,” he says.

Thad on Sports – Thome nearing 600

Jim Thome, now of the Minnesota Twins, is four dingers away from 600 home runs as I write this blog.

Why is this significant? When he reaches this milestone he will be only the eighth baseball player in history to do so.

The others are Barry Bonds , Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriquez.

Having emerged from the steroid era, asterisks need to be put beside the names of Bonds, Sosa and Rodriquez. I doubt that any of those three will ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Rodriquez, however, is the only one of the three to admit to using performance enhancing drugs.

Thome, therefore, is only one of five players to achieve this milestone without any science lab help.

Does this milestone make Thome  a Hall of Famer? Without question.

The steroid era has left a indelible mark. For every accomplishment, milestone going forward there will always be questions and doubters as to was he clean.

Thome has always appeared farmer boy clean and has been nothing but class throughout his career. Still, there are those who will question, who will doubt.

Can we blame them?

We can thank the steroid era for that.

Thad on Sports: Soccer just isn’t

NBC news anchor, Brian Williams, in reporting on the U.S. women’s soccer team’s semi final win over France, noted that the win earned the club the top spot on ESPN’s top 10 plays.

He added how this was a sign of the sport’s growing popularity in the U.S. What the television savvy Williams didn’t note was the reason for ESPN’S  choice had everything to do with owning the  television rights to the World Games.

Why is it we have to be inundated with an overzealous clamoring to elevate soccer popularity to a level it just isn’t when the World Games or Olympics come around every few years. It’s existence will go unnoticed after Sunday until the next big set of world games.

I still stand by the motto,  ” Why do kids play soccer? So they don’t have to watch it.”

Soccer has enjoyed growth at the youth level, however, that enthusiasm for playing the sport is not shared by those same players after their playing days have ended

Soccer is not football, is not basketball and is not baseball.

It is not must see television for most U.S. sport fans.

It is here today, come Monday it will gone from our minds and from ESPN’s Top 10 plays for another two years.

Thad on Sports: Game lacks stars and a commissioner

Emotional and physical stress kept Derek Jeter from starting in and/or attending  the 83rd All Star game.

It is also what took him to Miami Fla.

How does Jeter deal with stress? Kicking back in Miami with actress girlfriend Minka Kelly.

Jeter’s snub of the game is just the exclamation point.

A game, which once featured 13 Hall of Famers in 1967, now has a difficult time gaining the interest of the Bad News Bears.

Bud Selig, the dope that is baseball’s commissioner, had no problem with Derek Jeter being away from the All-Star Game. Says he would have made the same choice in Jeter’s place and that there has been no player over the past 15 years he respects more than Jeter.

This is the same game that was so important to Selig, that the commish decided that winner of the game should decide which league has home field advantage in the World Series.

A game so important that he’s okay with the game’s biggest names choosing not to play in it despite being voted in as a starter.

Sound like a disconnect. Allow me to introduce to you… Bud Selig!

Kevin and Kyle Feeney to race together over the July 4th weekend

Submitted by Matt Prieur

After sitting idle for over a month, 17-year-old Kyle Feeney was finally back behind the wheel of his Non-Winged Sprint Car on Friday, June 24th at the tight  1/4  (0.250) mile semi-banked paved oval of Spartan Speedway in Mason, Michigan. The man goal of the night with running twin 25-lap feature was to get valuable seat time and continue to learn. It was mission accomplished for the Oxford, Michigan teenager.

“Finally mother nature let us race, and we had a very productive weekend, both the driver and the crew learned a lot. I logged a lot of solid laps with a full night of racing plus the makeup feature that was rained out from earlier in the year.” Stated Feeney. “Ran my best heat race ever! Led the first few laps then ran side by side for the next few laps before settling into second place. My car was working awesome on the top side and racing side by side helped me build confidence that I can race wheel to wheel with the veterans.” He added.

Feeney’s Father, Veteran Kevin Feeney then headed down to South Bend Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 26th for the Auto Value Super Sprints event at the fast  1/4  (0.250) mile high-banked paved oval located just south of the Michigan / Indiana state line. “South Bend proved to be a challenge, with real tight racing and slick track conditions on a hot Sunday afternoon! During qualifying I drove in a little too hard and skated up the track resulting in a less than stellar lap time.” The elder Feeney explained.

“Ran a sold third in the heat race and used the laps to try and learn as much about the track as I could for the feature. It was obvious that passing was going to be very difficult and that it would be easy to get in trouble if you got too aggressive, so starting in 14th I decided it was best to be patient and let things sort themselves out,” He continued. “This proved to be a good strategy as there were numerous caution flags and quite a few tore up race cars.”

After all was said and done, Feeney brought home a fourth place finish in the Feature, which was won by Angola, Indiana legend, Hank Lower. “We managed to hold our own and all in all it was a good point’s day for the #42 car.” Feeney continued. “Unfortunately my TNT Promotions teammate, Bill Tyler in the #24 car was collected in someone else’s wreck while running in the top five, which destroyed his race car. Due to the severity of the damage, the team is working hard to get our primary car ready for this week at Dixie and Owosso so Bill can run the car we have had at the first three events this season.” He added.

The Auto Value Super Sprints will spend the Fourth of July Holiday Weekend at two tracks both Feeney’s are very familiar with; Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, Michigan on Friday, July 1st and then Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan on Saturday, July 2nd. Kevin Feeney has seen plenty of success at both speed plants with Feature Wins in the past while Kyle Feeney was the 2010 Rookie of the Year at both speed plants as well.

“Really looking forward to this weekend as both tracks are close to home and we had a great race car at both venues last year and I have had success at both tracks in the past.” The Oxford, Michigan veteran added. “It’s also going to be the first time that I have competed against my son which will be a lot of fun!” Feeney ended.

Kyle Feeney then added; “After the crew and I were talking about how we have the next few weeks off and how we really wanted to race. My dad suggested we put a winged car together and run during the off weeks. He didn’t have to ask twice and I had the engine out of the non-winged car ready to go into the winged car.” He laughed. “I know we’ll be a little down on power with our 360 motor compared to the 410 engines the Series races, but it will give me more seat time and the best part is; I get to race against my Dad for the first time.” He ended.

While the younger Feeney makes his Auto Value Super Sprints Series debut, his Father advanced four positions in the season long points chase after his fourth place finish at South Bend as he went from eighth to an impressive fourth in his quest to defend his 2010 Series Championship and he’s only 29 markers back of first place, currently being held by Jason Cox.

For the remainder of the 2011 racing season, Kyle Feeney’s #99 Non-Winged Sprint Car will carry sponsorship from Pro Cote Floor Covering Systems as well as U-Coat-It, Weld Racing, Racing Head Service, Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, M.P.H. Promotions and Feeney Motorsports. For the two Auto Value Super Sprints races this weekend at Dixie and Owosso, Feeney will sport the #98 that his Father ran for many seasons while carrying the same sponsors that have been supporting his Non-Winged efforts.

Kevin Feeney’s #42 Sprint Car has support from U-Coat-It, as well as Dowker Racing Engines, Joe Montgomery Builders, Hamilton Trucking, Simpson Racing Products, Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, M.P.H. Promotions, and TNT Promotions.
