Lansing schools tap Mi Sports Page to publish programs

Mi Sports Page in its commitment to help promote and celebrate the high school student athlete has reached an agreement with Lansing Eastern and Lansing Waverly Schools to design and publish their school athletic programs.

This agreement positions Mi Sports Page to help Lansing Area Schools garner funding for athletics during these increasingly challenging economic times for schools.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, 55.5% of all students took part in high school sports in 2010. School sports and interscholastic activities provide an opportunity for children to participate in meaningful team experiences which are often an indicator of drop-out rates and of success in college. A recent USA Today survey found that 95% of the Fortune 500 Companies CEO’s participated in extracurricular activities.

“The programs, at no cost to the schools,  contain color pictures of  Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams, rosters, schedules and a season preview story for each varsity team during the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons,” explained Mi Sports Page Program editor, Thad Kraus.

Dave Panici, Lansing Eastern athletic director, noted not only are school funds short, but it does not have the time nor staff to publish it own programs.

“The programs are also a way for Mi Sports Page to help Lansing area companies reach this important targeted audience. Not only will they reach an incredibly brand loyal and grateful consumer, sponsors will be helping to fill the gap, so kids can keep sports and activities in their schools,” concluded Mi Sports Page’s Connie Sweet.

Lowell’s volleyball approach lands Red Arrows in different place; Lowell outlasts GR Christian in five sets

The volleyball team that wins set one usually wins a five-set match.

Lowell volleyball coach Gigi Peal adds her own take. “I also think the team that wins set four also wins the match,” she explains.

So when Lowell lost sets one and four and still  won its match against Grand Rapids Christian, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 15-1, Peal called it unconventional.

However, there has not been anything unconventional about this Red Arrow club’s (22-9-2, 5-1) volleyball game. Lowell’s game has been at a different place.

And yes, an unfamiliar place, the Red Arrows with three league games remaining are just one game in back of the penthouse’s top floor, now resided in by East Grand Rapids.

With a win against EGR on Thursday, Lowell can turn that top spot into a double occupancy.

“East is playing well and we will have to play well to beat them,”  Peal said. “We’re playing with a different level of confidence and success since the last time we met.”

What is it that has elevated Lowell’s play?

“This has been a fun group of girls to coach. They all want to do what’s best for each other,” Peal said.

Not surprising. It’s the same group that selected “I play for her” as its team slogan.  “They’re all doing there best so that other teammates can find success. They’re playing for each other,” Peal said.

So far this year, Lowell has received the play it expected from sophomore, Abby Petroelje; an unexpected level of play it needed from senior outside hitters Stephanie Stevens and Hannah Tawney; and the consistently strong play of its two best players Arielle Nausieda and Jordan Timmer.

Red Arrow success against the Pioneers, according to the Lowell coach, will be dependent on controlling the ball on its side of the net, taking care of what it can control, service and serve receive and not playing timid.

Successful execution will land Lowell in that different place. That most coveted place, with a shot at its first ever league title.

Spots one through six remain the same and there’s some juggling at seven through 10.

We also have a couple new faces to welcome in week eight.

The game of the week is Muskegon at Grand Haven. South Christian and Catholic Central won’t be bad either.

1. Grand Rapids Christian (7-0) pounded Greenville 49-0 and appears ready to claim its first O-K White Conference championship. However, there is one little blip on that schedule remaining, that’s right – East Grand Rapids.

2.  Rockford (6-1) punished Grandville 45-0 in O-K Red league play. Hudsonville is next. There’s a  slight chance the Eagles could surprise.

3. Zeeland West (7-0), wasn’t expected to have a tough time against Unity Christian (36-6) and it didn’t.

4. Lowell’s (6-1) young offensive line looks to have taken that next step, making the Red Arrows a tough out once again come playoff time.  The Red Arrows rolled up 335 yards on the ground against Northview.

5. Muskegon (6-1) held on against West Ottawa. Now travel to Grand Haven. The winner holds out hope of still tying Rockford for the league title should the Rams slip.

6. Grand Haven (6-1) buried East Kentwood (59-20) in preparation for tough two-game finish at home against Muskegon and West Ottawa.

7. Catholic Central (6-1) powered past Forest Hills Eastern, 28-7. It now has a tough, tough road game against South Christian. A win gives it the O-K Gold title outright.

8. Zeeland East (6-1) lurks in the shadows in case Zeeland West falls. East rolls Rogers 55-15.

9. Forest Hills Central (4-3) has respectable losses to Zeeland West, Grand Rapids Christian, and Lowell. Rangers could surprise someone come playoff time, provided they make it.

10. This week’s 10-spot cluster is filled by a couple “newbies” South Christian (5-2) and Kenowa Hills (5-2).

Lowell 45, Northview 15 – O-line drives Lowell to O-K White win over Northview

Momentum doesn’t carry over from week to week, but good offensive line play can.

That was the case Friday night as Lowell rolled to a 45-15 O-K White Conference win over Northview.

“Our offensive line came together last week in the second half against East Grand Rapids,” said Lowell football coach Noel Dean. “It had a decision to make. What was it going to be? It made the right decision.”

What it did in the second half against EGR and against the Wildcats was fire off the ball drive its opponent back.

Driven by last week's second-half success, Lowell's offensive line was instrumental in Lowell running for 335 yards against Northview.

The result against Northview was 335 yards rushing. The biggest beneficiary of its work was quarterback Gabe Dean.  The senior ran the ball 29 times, amassing 226 yards while rushing for five touchdowns.

“Credit the offensive line. It stepped up as an offensive unit,” Gabe Dean said. “It’s play will define what type team we’re going to be.”

What is clear, is the type of player/leader Dean wants to be going forward. “I need to relax and just enjoy the game. I’ve carried around too much stress. It’s time to relax and enjoy the time I have left as the Lowell quarterback.”

Lowell needed less than three minutes  on its opening drive to put up the game’s first crooked number. The 60-yard drive culminated with a five-yard touchdown run by Dean.

The Red Arrows added a second quarter 37-yard Grant Brueker filed goal and a Dean two-yard scoring burst as they took a 17-0 lead into half-time.

The victory, Lowell’s sixth of the year, qualifies the Red Arrows for yet another playoff berth.

“We’re happy to be in the playoffs. It’s a special moment and it’s not something we take for granted,” Lowell’s coach explained.

Lowell tallied touchdowns on each of its first four second half  possessions. Dean did the honors on the first three with runs of two, eight and 40 yards. Titan Anderson ended the scoring with a 10-yard, fourth quarter scamper.

Red Arrow Reed Stormzand stops this Northview rushing effort.

Northview ran for just 53 yards and threw for 145. All seven completions were to senior wide out Kevin Rich. He caught touchdown passes of 74 and two yards.

The 6-1 Red Arrows will travel to Greenville Friday night. The Yellow Jackets defeated Lowell last year 35-21.

Northview outlasts Lowell, 2-1

Game two was much like the first.

Who you kidding? That’s like saying losing a series to the Yankees in October is the same as losing one in May.

The second match-up ended, like the first, at 1-1 in regulation. It was also 1-1 after one overtime, but this second overtime forged a victor.

Lowell and Northview, with the O-K White league title on the line, saw the Wildcats on the strength of an Ian Mikowski goal defeat the Red Arrows 2-1.

“I thought we had our chances, but we didn’t finish when we had the opportunity. Sometimes, that’s soccer. You work hard and get opportunities, but you just have to finish.,” said Lowell boys soccer coach Rich O’Keefe

The win puts the defending league champion atop the O-K White with two games to play against East Grand Rapids and Greenville. A loss would open the door to a possible sharing of the crown with Lowell.

Lowell’s (5-2-1) two conference games will come against Greenville and Creston.

Northview, now 6-1-1 in league play, battled back from a 1-0 first-half deficit when Todd Korcal booted on past Liam Kelly to tie the score at 1-1 with a little over six minutes to play.

The goal countered a Red Arrow goal by senior Joe Sweet on an assist by Matt Kyllonen.

Thursday night’s meeting may not be the last time these two squads face-off. Both will be a part of the eight-team field at the Forest Hills Northern district.

“We still have two more regular season games left, and anything can happen in soccer, but winning tonight’s game would have given us a chance to control our own destiny,” Lowell coach Rich O’Keefe concluded. “We came up a little bit short. Northview did a good job.”

Lowell win sets up league showdown with Northview

This time of year, positioning has much to do with how conference championships  play out.

Lowell boys’ soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 3-0 shutout  over East Grand Rapids.

The win, in combination with Northview’s 6-3 loss to Grand Rapids Christian (4-2-1), positions the Red Arrows with an opportunity to claim sole possession of the O-K White with a victory over Northview on Thursday when the two clubs meet at Lowell. The schools tied 1-1 in their first meeting.

Both clubs will enter the game with a record of 5-1-1 in the conference.

The Wildcats are the defending O-K White champions as well as the defending Division 2 state soccer champions.

It took the Red Arrows (13-2-1) a full half of play before it solved the Pioneer puzzle. Neither team was able to crease the net in the first half, but that ended shortly after the start of period two when A.J. Morris on a feed from Spencer Lyon netted Lowell’s first goal and provided it a lead it would not relinquish.

The Red Arrows followed up that first goal a little while later when Lyon booted one past Pioneer goalie James Karstens, increasing the Lowell lead to 2-0. He was assisted by Matt Kyllonen.

The game’s final goal was posted  by Kyllonen on an assist by Grant Brueker.

Grand Rapids Christian leap frogs Rockford with its win over Northview while Zeeland West continues its winning ways.

Something had to give, Lowell’s losing streak at East Grand Rapids its 12-year streak of not losing two regular season games in a row. The latter remained in tack, the streak at Memorial Field has ended.

A little shuffling in this week’s top 10, but just as much position solidification by by area teams.

1. Grand Rapids Christian (6-0) fended off a pesky group of Wildcats to post a convincing 38-13 win. The Eagles remain one of two undefeated teams left in the Mi Sports Page Top 10. Christian’s play and its win over Lowell, a team that beat Rockford, makes it this week’s choice for number one.

2.  Rockford (5-1) punished East Kentwood 41-6 in O-K Red league play. Unless the Rams slip up, they should be your 2011 Red champions.

3. Zeeland West (6-0), a 56-12 winner over Wyoming Rogers, has games with Unity Christian Friday, and then Hamilton and Byron Center.

4. Lowell (5-1) recovered nicely from a disappointing performance against the Eagles with a big win (23-14) over rival East Grand Rapids.

5. Muskegon (5-1) did just enough to discard Jenison,  20-12. Not impressive, but any win following a loss to Rockford is commendable.

6. Grand Haven (5-1) other than it’s loss to Rockford the Bucs have been stellar. Grand Haven bested Hudsonville 28-6.

7. Catholic Central (4-1) building toward another playoff run derailed Caledonia, 14-7.

8. Holland (4-1) recovered its overtime loss to Kenwa Hills with a 40-3 thumping over Reeths-Puffer.

9. Zeeland East (5-1) strong in its 28-0 win against Unity Christian.

10. This week’s 10-spot cluster is filled by Northview (4-2) and East Grand Rapids (4-2).

Lowell 23, EGR 14 – Lowell breaks through in second half to end drought

Lowell had not won at East Grand Rapids since its 19-7 win in 2000.

The Red Arrows had not lost two games in a row since 1999 when it fell to East Grand Rapids 28-27 and then lost the following week to Zeeland (now Zeeland East) 27-14.

“Something had to give. We haven’t won here in a long time and its been a while since we had lost two in a row,” said Lowell football coach Noel Dean.

What did change Friday night was Lowell went into Memorial Field and persevered in a  23-14 thriller over the Pioneers, breaking an 11-year drought.

“What a great game. And what a great game for this senior group who until tonight have never won a game at the varsity level against East,” Dean explained.

Joshua Addington ran for 126 yards and a touchdown as Lowell defeated East Grand Rapids 23-14 Friday night.

The one constant that remained the same throughout Friday night’s game was the defensive effort from both clubs.

“Our defense was outstanding. And in that first half it outscored our offense,” Dean noted.

With the exception of two big touchdown passes of 63 (to DeAndfre Grady) and 58 yards (to Jahaan Brown), the Red Arrow defense bottled up the Pioneer attack throughout the game.

“Other than those two big offensive plays we had no rhythm on offense,” said East Grand Rapids coach Peter Stuursma.”Out defense gave a herculean effort lout there. It stood on it head tonight. “In the end though we had too many mistakes and our defense was out on the field too long. Dean (Gabe) is a 215 pound, three year starter and he’s going to wear you down and start breaking tackles late in games.”

Lowell, unable to sustain any offense in the first half, called on its line and a two-man running game in the second half to solve the Pioneer defense.

“I’m not sure what happened in that first half, but our offensive line guys pulled together, we made some adjustments and the kids played their tails off in the second half,” Dean said.

Quarterback Gabe Dean and running back Joshua Addington accounted for 35 offensive plays in the second half. Addington rushed for 90 of his game-high 126 yards while Dean ran for 59 of his 77 yards rushing.

All that said the game’s biggest play came on a fourth and 16 at the EGR 36 yard line. Dean rolled back and found a wide open Blake Lyman for a 35 yard gain, putting the ball at the one yard line. One play later Dean busted it in the end zone.

On its previous series, East’s defense stopped Lowell on a fourth and one from the Pioneer one, after Lowell had driven 59 yards in 13 plays.

“I’m sure it was a fun game to watch,” Stuursma said.  “It was a game between two schools who play hard and do the right things on the field,” Stuursma explained. “Our kids will stay together and get better.”

Pioneer running back David Drummond (#20) was held to 79 yards rushing by the Lowell defense. The Pioneer back picked up 50 of those yards in the final minute of play.

Lowell scored the game’s first touchdown when Dean blasted in from the one to start the second quarter. The Red Arrows were also first on the board  in the second half when Grant Breuker booted a 35 yard field goal, capping off a 44 yard drive to the EGR 18 yard line.

Addington had the honors  of tallying the game’s last score when he rumbled in from 28 yards out with 35 seconds left on the game clock.

Lowell finished the game with 203 yards on the ground and 43 through the air.

East ran for 84 and threw for 198.

Lowell, now 5-1,  will host Northview (4-2) on Friday.
