Following results from Friday one might consider picking the teams out of a hat for its Top 10 ranking. There was plenty of upheaval as a couple of unbeaten perennial powers went down to defeat.
Lowell, ranked number one, was beaten soundly by Grand Rapids Christian. Muskegon lost a heartbreaker at home to Rockford. Holland had their perfect season marred by a double overtime loss to Kenowa Hills.
Through five weeks of the season it appears that Rockford and Grand Rapids Christian are the area’s top two teams.
It also appears that Lowell and Holland have some work to do.
1. Rockford (4-1) is playing as good a football as anyone in West Michigan. The Rams posted an impressive 29-26 road win over previously unbeaten Muskegon.
2. Grand Rapids Christian (5-0) made a believer out of any doubters with their 24-point win over Lowell. Not only is this a talented group of players, but now it is also a physically tough club. The Eagles are only one of two undefeated teams left in the Mi Sports PageTop 10.
3. Zeeland West (5-0) had no problems with an undermanned Wyoming Park team. The big game with Hudsonville Unity Christian is in two weeks.
4. East Grand Rapids’ (4-1) crushed Greenville Friday night. The one-loss Pioneers now prepare for the one-loss Red Arrows. When is the last time we’ve said that leading up to this game.
5. Muskegon (4-1), stung by Rockford; all Big Reds losses sting but losing to the Rams is like no other for the Muskegon fan base.
6. Lowell (4-1), had some chinks in its armor unveiled Friday night by the talented Eagles. The Red Arrows now have the difficult task of preparing for East. When is the last time the Red Arrows lost back-to-back regular season games?
7. Grand Haven (4-1) creeps to seven with a 28-6 win over Hudsonville.
8. Catholic Central (4-1) continues it’s upward climb after a week one loss. Friday night the Cougars manhandled Wayland.
9. Holland (4-1) may have read too many press clippings. Dutch weren’t ready to play and Kenowa Hills was… biggest upset of the week.
10. This week’s 10-spot cluster is filled by the usual suspects Northview (4-1), Zeeland East (4-1) and we add Hudsonville Unity Christian (4-1) in week five.
