This time of year, positioning has much to do with how conference championships play out.
Lowell boys’ soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 3-0 shutout over East Grand Rapids.
The win, in combination with Northview’s 6-3 loss to Grand Rapids Christian (4-2-1), positions the Red Arrows with an opportunity to claim sole possession of the O-K White with a victory over Northview on Thursday when the two clubs meet at Lowell. The schools tied 1-1 in their first meeting.
Both clubs will enter the game with a record of 5-1-1 in the conference.
The Wildcats are the defending O-K White champions as well as the defending Division 2 state soccer champions.
It took the Red Arrows (13-2-1) a full half of play before it solved the Pioneer puzzle. Neither team was able to crease the net in the first half, but that ended shortly after the start of period two when A.J. Morris on a feed from Spencer Lyon netted Lowell’s first goal and provided it a lead it would not relinquish.
The Red Arrows followed up that first goal a little while later when Lyon booted one past Pioneer goalie James Karstens, increasing the Lowell lead to 2-0. He was assisted by Matt Kyllonen.
The game’s final goal was posted by Kyllonen on an assist by Grant Brueker.
